The Different Types of DJ Desks: Which is right for you?

There are many different types of DJ desks, each with its advantages and benefits.

As a DJ, you’ll spend countless hours working on new music and mixing tracks at your desk. That’s why having a functional and comfortable work desk is essential.

From organising your equipment practically to improving the way you work, the best DJ desk for you will complement your work style rather than inhibit it.

Of course, everyone is different so before we dive into the many different types of DJ desks, let’s look into the different factors one needs to consider.

Factors to Consider when Choosing the Best DJ Desk

1.Space

How much equipment are you looking to accommodate? What sized workspace will you need?

These are important factors in helping you narrow down the choices in a DJ desk.

2.Ergonomics

An ergonomic desk is designed to facilitate long stretches of work without negatively impacting your health and well-being.

It’s about more than just comfort, as well. You need a desk that facilitates and promotes healthy postures so that you can get the work done that you need to without compromising yourself physically.

3.Material

Every type of desk material comes with its benefits and drawbacks. Metal desks for example or easier to clean. While wooden desks appeal to many people for aesthetic reasons.

Additionally, the durability, price and weight of any particular DJ desk will be largely dependent on the type of material as well.

4.Cable and Cord Management

As a DJ, you’ll have many different pieces of equipment and hardware that require electricity.

Without a desk that offers good cable and cord management and access, you may find your DJ desk getting cluttered quickly and your space becoming unmanageable. Of course, if you prefer concealed cables as well, this needs to be taken into account.

5.Portability

Depending on how much you travel as a DJ, you may want to consider a highly portable desk.

Opting for furniture that can be folded up, is lightweight and is easy to carry will make working as a mobile DJ much, much easier.

6.Price

Last but certainly not least, is the price. DJ desks range in price point.

Think about your budget and what sort of features are essential to help narrow down the different options.

Types of DJ Desks

Standard DJ Desk

A standard DJ desk is simple and traditional. With plenty of flat surface area for what you need as well as shelves, drawers and other storage facilities, a standard DJ desk might not have frills but it certainly gets the job done.

Advantages: It’s affordable, easy to assemble and can be found just about anywhere.

Disadvantage: Limited opportunity to create a custom DJ desk.

Modular DJ Desk

A modular desk is built for customisation. With various components that are re-arrangeable and interchangeable, you can create the configuration you need for a custom DJ desk. For DJs wanting flexibility and choice in their set-up, a module desk can be the right way to go.

Advantage: Highly customisable with plenty of storage opportunities.

Disadvantage: Can require more assembly and, depending on the modular components, can be more expensive.

Standing DJ Desk

The standing DJ desk allows artists to adjust the height of the tabletop to allow sitting or standing. There are many different types of standing desks, but most include some form of adjustable storage and sleek, modern designs.

Advantage: Flexibility in use and highly ergonomic.

Disadvantage: Limited storage space compared to other options and not highly portable.

Foldable Desk

The foldable DJ desk is perfect for mobile artists finding themselves frequently travelling to gigs and event venues. Portable, lightweight and easily foldable, these simple desks prioritise practicality.

Advantage: Highly portable, flexible desks are meant to be lightweight and easy to store.

Disadvantage: When set up they may offer limited work area and storage space.

Corner Desk

The corner DJ desk suits–of course–the corner of a room. This way it maximises both the surface area space on which to set up equipment and maximises the amount of space left in the room. Due to the nature of a corner desk, there is often plenty of storage potential as well.

Advantages: Very space efficient with lots of storage potential.

Disadvantage: May require a lot of assemblies and may not be suited to every room.

L-Shaped Desk

An L-shaped desk is similar in design to a corner desk only; it doesn’t necessarily need to be placed in the corner. For that reason, it may be slightly more limited in storage space, but it still has plenty of flat surface area on which to work and set up.

Advantage: Ample space on which to work and the possibility of creating a custom DJ desk.

Disadvantage: Can be a more expensive option and does take up more space.

The Best DJ Desk for You

The best DJ desk for your needs will depend on your priorities. Do you want one that is primarily functional in terms of surface area and storage? Does comfort matter most? Do you have a unique style or aesthetic preference?

All of the above desks are simply general recommendations. Each and every DJ will prefer a different type of desk and workstation.
