Of course, and with everything, once you start developing your skills and want to progress, you’re going to want to upgrade. We’re not going to lie, it’s easy to spend thousands and thousands of dollars on expensive DJ gear.Â
But if you’re just getting started, there’s nothing wrong with starting small. And you can easily do this while sticking to a budget of around $700.
How to Get Started Building a DJ Setup
For a beginner DJ on a tight budget, it’s crucial to prioritise essential equipment while being mindful of cost-effective options. Here’s a step-by-step approach to putting together a DJ setup without breaking the bank:
Assess Your Needs as a Beginner DJ
Determine what equipment you absolutely need to start DJing. Focus on essentials such as DJ controllers, headphones, and a laptop or iOS device.
Research Budget-Friendly Professional DJ Setup Options
Look for entry-level DJ controllers that offer basic functionality without compromising quality. Consider purchasing used or refurbished equipment, as it can often be significantly cheaper than buying brand new.
Explore DIY Solutions To Reduce Beginner DJ Setup Cost
Get creative and consider DIY solutions for certain equipment or accessories. For example, you can build a simple laptop stand or customise your DJ booth using affordable materials.
Prioritise Laptop DJ Software Upgradability
Choose equipment that allows for future upgrades as your budget and skills grow. Invest in versatile gear that can adapt to your evolving needs and preferences over time.
Take Advantage of Deals and Discounts
Keep an eye out for sales, promotions, and discounts on DJ equipment. Subscribe to newsletters, follow retailers on social media, and join online communities to stay updated on the latest deals–like DJ City!
Start Small and Build Over Time
Remember that building a DJ setup is a journey, not a race. Start with the essentials and gradually add to your setup as your budget allows and as you gain more experience and confidence as a DJ.

With dedication, practice, and a bit of creativity, you’ll be well on your way to honing your skills and rocking the dance floor without breaking the bank.
What do you need to invest in?
So just what do you need to start DJing when you’ve only got a budget of $700?
Essential Beginner DJ Gear
1. Laptop/iOS Device
2. DJ Controllers
3. DJ Headphones
4. Speakers
5. Cables
Laptop/iOS Device
Why is a laptop/device important?
Beginner DJs should consider investing in several key pieces of equipment to establish a solid foundation for their practice and performances. First and foremost, a laptop or iOS device is essential. This device serves as the central hub for running DJ software, such as Traktor DJ Software, which in turn forms the backbone of modern DJing.Â
DJ software provides access to a digital music collection or libraries, allowing DJs to organise tracks, create playlists, and easily search for songs to include in their sets. Additionally, it offers the flexibility to download or purchase new digital music, update DJ software, and expand capabilities through plugins or additional DJ software.
Finding the right device
With more expensive DJ Setups, having access to a laptop isn’t always going to be necessary. However, with most entry-level setups, and the one we’re looking at today, you’re going to require access to either a laptop or an iOS device. For the purposes of this article, we’re going to assume you already have access to one or the other, along with an existing music library.
If you need to get hold of some new music for DJing, it’s a great idea to join a DJ Pool. These pools give you access to exclusive remixes and mash-ups that you might not find anywhere else. Check out our video below to find some more great places for finding music!
DJ Controller
Why is a controller important?
A DJ controller is another crucial component of a beginner DJ setup. Acting as a physical interface between the DJ and the DJ software on the laptop or iOS device, a DJ controller typically consists of jog wheels, faders, knobs, and buttons that mimic the functions of traditional DJ equipment. This controller provides tactile control over various aspects of the mix, such as adjusting volume levels, EQ settings, tempo, and effects. It facilitates hands-on manipulation of music, allowing for more precise and expressive mixing compared to using just a laptop or iOS device.
Finding the right controller
In this setup and for the purposes of keeping things under $700, we’ve gone with the Pioneer DDJ-200. This is a great entry-level 2-Channel DJ Controller and does everything you need it to while you’re learning the ropes.Â
It’s compact and portable, so you can take it with you just about anywhere and it also works with both a computer/laptop and iOS Devices via Bluetooth. So it’s really the beginner’s ultimate controller that gives you the power to DJ anywhere. Not to mention, it’s super affordable so it’s not going to break the bank.
If you do have a little bit more money and want to go the next step up, we’d recommend looking at something like the Pioneer DDJ-400 or the DDJ-SB3. These controllers are a little bigger than the DDJ-200 and are going to give you a few extra features as well. The main difference is whether you prefer to use the Serato DJ Software or Pioneer DJs native Rekordbox software.
From there, when you’re ready to upgrade you might want to look at the DDJ-800 or a 4-Channel option such as the DDJ-FLX6!
DJ Headphones
Why are headphones important?
DJ headphones are indispensable for monitoring and cueing tracks before they are played to the audience. Specifically designed for DJs, these headphones provide accurate sound reproduction and isolation from external noise, enabling DJs to hear details in the music clearly.Â
They play a critical role in beatmatching, a fundamental skill in DJing, by allowing DJs to listen to both the current track playing through the speakers and the next track queued up in their headphones simultaneously. Moreover, DJ headphones protect the DJ’s hearing by providing sufficient isolation from loud monitor speakers in noisy club environments.
Finding the right pair of headphones
You’re going to need some good-quality headphones for your DJ setup. In our mock setup, we’ve opted for the Pioneer DJ HDJ-CUE1.Â
At just over $100, these are a great budget option that provides you with great sound to make your DJ transitions a breeze. They’re also built incredibly well for the price so they’re sure to stand the test of time.Â
What’s cool about these headphones is that they’re completely customisable. So you’re able to purchase different coloured ear pads and cables to freshen up your headphones and make them truly unique.
There are also Bluetooth variations in different colours if you’re looking to use your headphones for casual listening as well.
Alternatively, if you have a little bit more money to spend, you might want to opt for the industry-standard pair of headphones, such as Sennheiser HD25s. These are found in DJ booths all over the world; you really can’t go wrong with these in your arsenal!
DJ Speakers
Why are speakers important?
Speakers are essential for playing music to the audience. DJ speakers, also known as monitor speakers or PA (public address) speakers, are designed to deliver clear and balanced sound across a wide frequency range.Â
They allow the DJ to gauge how the mix sounds to the audience, ensuring that levels, EQ, and overall sound quality are appropriate for the venue. Moreover, speakers provide the energy and atmosphere essential for engaging the audience and creating an immersive experience during performances.
Finding the right speakers
When it comes to speakers, there are endless options out there. But you really can’t go past the line of AVE Fusions. Sticking to our budget, you’re able to pick up the 4″ pair for about $200 which is amazing value and they sound great.
If you have a bigger space, budget and are looking for some more power. There are also some bigger options available that will definitely do the trick while still at a great price!
Once you’ve mastered the art of the bedroom DJ and are ready to DJ at parties, you’ll then want to spend a bit more money on some powered speakers such as the AVE REVO range.
Cables
Why are cables important?
Cables are crucial for connecting various audio interface components of the DJ setup, such as the laptop, DJ controller, speakers, and headphones. They ensure reliable signal transmission without interference or loss of quality.Â
High-quality cables are particularly important for minimising noise and maintaining audio fidelity in professional DJ setups. Additionally, cables offer flexibility and convenience for setting up and configuring the DJ equipment in different venues and setups, whether it’s a small bedroom studio or a large nightclub stage.
Finding the right cables
Fortunately, finding the right cables for your audio interface is easier than ever. Connex by AVE offers a massive selection of connections and lengths to suit your space. They’re affordable and durable, and they’re definitely going to do the job!
