Neumann U 87 Ai Studio Condenser Microphone

The Neumann U 87 Ai is a recognised studio microphone for speech and vocals, combining a smooth, refined sound with practical recording flexibility. Its three selectable polar patterns, switchable low cut and pad make it adaptable across a wide range of applications while keeping the controls straightforward.

Choose the Right Pickup Pattern

Omnidirectional, cardioid and figure-8 patterns give you three distinct ways to capture sound. Choose the setting that best suits the source and room setup. This is whether you need the stated directional pattern for a vocal or speech recording. Or, a different response for another studio application.

Shape the Signal Before Recording

Switchable low cut and pad controls add useful flexibility at the microphone. The low cut can help tailor the signal before recording, while the pad provides a preattenuation option. With preattenuation, the microphone’s maximum SPL for THD 0.5% is 127 dB.

Refined Condenser Design

At its core, the U 87 Ai uses a pressure gradient transducer and a dual diaphragm condenser capsule design. A FET circuit and transformer balanced output follow the microphone’s established engineering approach, while very low self-noise supports clean, detailed capture for speech, vocals and studio recording.

Made for Established Studio Rigs

The microphone uses an XLR 3 F matching connector and a supply voltage of 48 V ± 4 V through P48, with current consumption of 0.8 mA. Its 500 g weight, 56 mm diameter and 200 mm length give it a clearly defined physical format for positioning in a recording setup.
