Sequential is an American musical instrument company that specializes in synthesizers. Originally founded as Sequential Circuits back in 1974; Sequential is led by the renowned instrument designer and grammy winner, Dave Smith.
Sequential Circuits
Releasing the Prophet 5 in 1977, Dave Smith was the main man behind the world's first fully-programmable polyphonic synth. As well as being the first instrument that had an embedded microprocessor. Following the success of the Prophet 5, Sequential went on to release a number of innovative synthesizers and drum machines over the next 10 years. It's also worth noting that Dave Smith is widely considered the driving force behind the MIDI specification in 1981. As well as being the man who coined the acronym!
Then, in 1987; Sequential Circuits went out of business and was bought-out by Yamaha. Dave also happened to be president of one of Yamahas sub-divisions, before starting the Korg R&D group and producing synthesizers such as the Wavestation. Following on, Dave Smith took over as president of Seer Systems and developed the first software synth for Intel in 1994.
However, with endless love for hardware, and a realization of software limitations; Dave returned to the roots of synthesizer hardware and started up Dave Smith Instruments. As a result, musicians have grown to love a number of Dave Smith Instruments synthesizers including the Prophet X, Prophet Rev2, Prophet-6, OB-6, Pro 2, and Prophet 12.
Rebranding
Transition to 2015, Yamaha sold the Sequential Circuit brand back to Dave Smith at DSI. As a result, Dave decided to rebrand the company as Sequential in 2018, on the 40th anniversary of the original prophet. Therefore, bringing the legacy of Dave Smith and Sequential Circuits back full-circle!
Today, Sequential and Dave Smith continues to be at the forefront of innovative synthesizer hardware. While unveiling a new line of paraphonic synthesizers with the PRO 3 and PRO 3 Special Edition at the 2020 NAMM Show.
