Zoom H4essential 32-Bit Float Portable Field Recorder

The Zoom H4essential is a 4-track portable field recorder with 32-bit float recording, built-in X/Y microphones and 2 XLR/TRS combo inputs. It gives musicians, podcasters, filmmakers and content creators a flexible way to record rehearsals, interviews, location sound, podcasts and audio for video.

With onboard stereo microphones, external mic inputs, USB-C audio interface mode and SD card recording, the H4essential sits nicely between a simple handheld recorder and a more serious production tool. If you need more than a phone recording but still want something compact, it’s a strong little workhorse.

32-Bit Float Recording

32-bit float recording gives you far more headroom when capturing loud and quiet sources in the same take. That means less stress around setting perfect levels before you hit record, especially when recording live music, interviews, outdoor ambience or unpredictable sound sources.

The H4essential records up to 96kHz and uses dual A/D converters to help capture clean, detailed audio. For creators who work fast, that extra safety net is a big part of the appeal.

Built-In X/Y Mics and XLR/TRS Inputs

The onboard X/Y microphones can capture stereo sound up to 130dB SPL, making them useful for rehearsals, performances, ambience and general field recording. For more controlled setups, the 2 XLR/TRS combo inputs let you connect compatible external microphones or line-level sources.

Phantom power is supported on the XLR inputs, so you can use compatible condenser microphones when the recording setup calls for them. You also get a 3.5mm mic/line input and 3.5mm line output for headphones or camera connection.

Made for Music, Podcasts and Video Audio

Musicians can use the H4essential to record live shows, rehearsals, song ideas and stereo room sound. Podcasters can connect external microphones for interviews, while the built-in microphones are handy for quick on-the-go recording.

For video creators, the H4essential works well for location sound, dialogue capture, ambience and sound design. It’s a useful fit alongside camera microphones, lavalier mics and compact production setups.

USB Audio Interface and Streaming

Connect the H4essential to a PC, Mac, iOS or Android device via USB-C, and it can operate as a 4-in/2-out USB audio interface. You can also stream in 32-bit float while recording to an SD card at the same time, which is handy for podcasts, livestreams and content creation workflows.

If you’re building a compact recording setup, it also sits naturally beside DJ City’s wider range of audio interfaces, podcast equipment and audio recorders.

Practical Field Recording Features

The full-colour LCD screen makes menu navigation easier, while the waveform display helps you see your recording as it happens. The built-in mixer lets you adjust track levels, and the built-in speaker is useful for quick reference playback.

Zoom also supports accessibility features across the Essential Series, including audible menu descriptions through the built-in speaker or headphones. With current firmware support, the H4essential can also access features such as gain adjustment, AI noise reduction and MP3 recording.
